Government installs high-mast lights to fight growing crime in Gatong’ora, Ruiru
Residents of Gatong’ora village in Ruiru, Kiambu County are set to enjoy improved security and extended economic activity following the installation of a high-mast lighting system at Gatong’ora Police Station.
For decades, the area has grappled with persistent crime, including muggings and theft of household appliances, motorbikes and other valuables.
Residents have frequently reported incidents at the local police station, but poor lighting has long been blamed for enabling criminals to operate freely, especially at night.
Locals say the project will also boost the night-time economy by allowing boda boda operators and other small-scale traders to work safely after dark.
During the commissioning of the mast, residents expressed optimism that the improved lighting will reduce fear and harassment, creating a safer environment for both workers and commuters.
According to Sarah Muthoni from MP Simon King’ara’s office, the project is powered by a solar system, a move aimed at cutting electricity costs while ensuring uninterrupted lighting.
She noted that the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) will undertake similar lighting projects across the wider constituency as part of efforts to curb crime and improve public safety.
