AWWDA Board, PS Korir Inspect Progress of Mwache Dam Project in Kwale.
Leaders in Kenya’s water sector on Friday, March 13, 2026, toured the ongoing Mwache Multipurpose Dam Project in Kwale County, signaling renewed momentum in efforts to boost water security along the Coast.
The inspection was led by the Board of Directors and senior management of Athi Water Works Development Agency, headed by Chairperson Mary Mungai, alongside the Principal Secretary for Water and Sanitation, Julius Korir.
The high-level delegation visited the site to assess construction progress and review key milestones achieved so far under the project, which is being implemented by the Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation. The Mwache Dam forms part of the Coast Region Water Security and Climate Resilience Project (CWSCRP), a flagship initiative aimed at addressing persistent water shortages in the region.
Once complete, the dam is expected to transform water access in Mombasa County and Kwale by providing a reliable bulk water supply. Beyond domestic use, the project is also designed to support irrigation, enhance flood control, and drive socio-economic growth in the coastal region.
Officials noted that the project reflects a broader shift in the water sector, inspired by the so-called “Singapore transformation journey,” which emphasizes efficiency, accountability, and results-driven governance. This approach, they said, is already evident in the close collaboration between leadership and technical teams overseeing the dam’s implementation.
The visit not only underscored the government’s commitment to delivering critical infrastructure but also highlighted the Mwache Dam’s role as a cornerstone project in securing sustainable water resources for Kenya’s Coast.
