Gatundu North MP backs Ruto directive on Burundians as Gatundu parents raise concerns.
Gatundu North MP Njoroge Kururia has backed President William Ruto’s directive on the repatriation of Burundian nationals living and working in Kenya illegally, saying the government was justified in taking action against foreign nationals who had violated immigration laws.
Kururia argued that the presence of large numbers of foreign nationals had contributed to increased competition for employment and economic opportunities, particularly for Kenyan youth.
He said enforcement of immigration laws should be undertaken to safeguard the interests of Kenyan citizens while maintaining good relations with neighbouring countries.
However, parents in Gatundu North, Kiambu County, have raised concerns over the directive, urging the government to adopt a humane and orderly approach in dealing with Burundian nationals living and working in the country illegally.
The parents said the directive had triggered harassment, attacks and theft of property belonging to some Burundian nationals, warning that such actions could strain Kenya’s relations with its neighbours.
Speaking at Kamwangi village in Gatundu North during the issuance of Uwezo Fund money to beneficiaries, the parents called for restraint and peaceful coexistence between Kenyans and foreign nationals.
They cautioned that forceful or indiscriminate repatriation could expose Kenyans living and working abroad to similar treatment, potentially affecting thousands seeking employment and better economic opportunities in other countries.
The parents further called for stronger unity among East African countries, saying peaceful regional relations were essential for economic growth, trade and social development
