Police probe death of man who collapsed inside Ruiru bar
Police in Ruiru, Kiambu County, have launched investigations into the death of a man who collapsed and died inside a bar in Kahawa Sukari.
Ruiru Sub-County Police Commander Charles Kibathi said the man had visited Lagunas Tetemesha pub on Wednesday and ordered his preferred alcoholic drink, but bartenders declined to serve him after apparently considering his health condition.
According to Kibathi and Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Julius Too, preliminary investigations indicate that the man had previously been advised by medics to avoid alcohol.
Kibathi said the man, after being denied the drink, sat down on one of the seats in the bar and appeared to fall asleep. He was later found unresponsive, prompting the staff to alert the authorities.
The incident sparked panic among revellers and residents and came amid an intensified multi-agency crackdown on illicit and counterfeit alcoholic drinks in Kiambu County following several reported deaths linked to suspected harmful brews.
DCC Too urged the public and relatives of the deceased to remain calm as investigations continue, saying a post-mortem examination would establish the actual cause of death.
Meanwhile, Too said security agencies had seized hundreds of litres of illicit alcoholic drinks during the ongoing Operation Fagia, targeting outlets suspected of selling harmful and unlicensed alcoholic products.
Area MCA Kennedy Odhiambo described the deceased as a hardworking and promising man and called on authorities to take action against traders selling suspect alcoholic drinks.
Odhiambo also claimed that the bar where the man died did not have a county government licence, despite operating around the clock.
Police later removed the body from the premises and transferred it to the mortuary, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.
