
DEPUTY PRESIDENT PROF. KITHURE KINDIKI RECEIVES PRE-IBEC BRIEFING AHEAD OF 26TH ORDINARY SESSION IN KAREN, NAIROBI
Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki on Monday 27th January received a detailed pre-Intergovernmental Budget and Economic Council (IBEC) briefing ahead of the 26th Ordinary Session of the council.
The high-level preparatory meeting was held at the Deputy President’s official residence in Karen, Nairobi, with key stakeholders in attendance to fine-tune the agenda and address pressing economic and budgetary issues affecting the country.
Present at the briefing were Cabinet Secretary for National Treasury and Economic Planning, Hon. John Mbadi, Principal Secretary for Devolution, Ms. Teresia Mbaika, and Controller of Budget, Dr. Margaret Nyakang’o.
The Chairperson of the Commission on Revenue Allocation (CRA), Mrs. Mary Wanyonyi, also participated, alongside Saadia Kontoma, Vice Chairperson of the Intergovernmental Relations Technical Committee (IGRTC), and Dr. Gabriel Lagat, Head of the Intergovernmental Budget and Economic Council (IEBC).
The meeting focused on reviewing critical areas for discussion in the upcoming session, including revenue allocation, fiscal responsibility, and equitable resource distribution among counties. Prof. Kindiki emphasized the importance of fostering collaboration between the national and county governments to ensure sustainable economic growth and service delivery across the country.
“This pre-session briefing is a critical step in aligning our priorities and fostering consensus on matters that directly affect the livelihoods of Kenyans,” the Deputy President stated. “IBEC remains a vital platform for addressing fiscal challenges and advancing the economic development agenda.”
Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi noted that the National Treasury is keen on ensuring transparency and accountability in resource allocation, highlighting ongoing efforts to address the country’s fiscal challenges while maintaining equitable distribution.
The Controller of Budget, Dr. Margaret Nyakang’o, underscored the need for fiscal discipline among counties and outlined measures to strengthen oversight mechanisms for county spending. Similarly, CRA Chairperson Mary Wanyonyi called for innovative approaches to optimize revenue mobilization and distribution.
The upcoming 26th Ordinary Session of IBEC is expected to tackle key issues, including the 2025/26 budget cycle, disbursements to counties, and updates on implementing devolved functions. The forum will bring together governors, cabinet secretaries, and other senior officials to deliberate and resolve these matters.
The Deputy President commended the collaborative efforts of all stakeholders, expressing confidence that the 26th Ordinary Session of IBEC will yield meaningful outcomes for the betterment of the nation.
