IEBC Holds Media Training to Boost Communication and Public Trust
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on Friday convened a media handling and etiquette training workshop for its leadership, including the Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, Commissioners, and senior managers.
The workshop seeks to strengthen the Commission’s engagement with the media, enhance its visibility, and improve both internal and external communication ahead of future electoral processes.
Speaking during the session, IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon underscored the critical role of the media in elections, noting that it shapes public discourse, sets the agenda, and frames how the public receives electoral messages.
“We need to understand media platforms, the various tools used, ethics, rules, and regulations so that as a Commission we know how best to work and engage with the media. Elections are central to the stability and security of the nation, and they directly affect the social and economic fabric of our country,” said Ethekon.
He further emphasized the need for responsible communication, urging the Commission to ensure accuracy and credibility in its messaging. “What the Commission says should build and not destroy the country. Let us get this right by granting the media access to credible, verifiable information to fight misinformation and fake news,” he added.
Kenya Editors’ Guild President, Zubeida Kananu, who also addressed the workshop, lauded the Commission’s proactive approach to media engagement.
“This confirms that if IEBC gets it right with the media, then their communication will be right and the public will receive the right information on the electoral process and the activities the Commission is undertaking,” she said.
Kananu further noted that access to credible information is the foundation of media work, enabling journalists to inform and educate the public while helping the Commission to build trust.
