Govt Probes Gikomba Fires as DP Kindiki Assures Support for Affected Traders
Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki has announced that thorough investigations are underway to determine the cause of the frequent fires at Gikomba and other markets across Nairobi, following yet another devastating blaze earlier this month.
Speaking at his official residence in Karen on Wednesday 9th March 2025, Prof. Kindiki revealed that President William Ruto has directed investigative agencies to uncover the root causes of these recurring infernos, including the most recent fire on April 1 that destroyed the businesses of more than 300 small-scale traders.
“The President has instructed relevant agencies to investigate these fires. It doesn’t make sense that they keep occurring year after year. We must uncover the truth and put an end to this,” said the Deputy President.
Prof. Kindiki hosted traders affected by the Gikomba fire and assured them that the government would support their recovery efforts while working to address broader systemic challenges facing informal traders.
“I have spoken with your leaders and we’ve agreed on a way forward. The government is committed to resolving the issues you’ve raised,” he said.
He further highlighted the government’s initiative to construct over 400 modern markets across the country, aimed at uplifting small-scale traders and “mama mboga” by providing them with dignified and well-equipped workspaces.
“We are modernizing trade and dignifying our traders. These new markets will have essential facilities such as cold rooms for fresh produce, spaces for lactating mothers, as well as access to water and electricity,” Prof. Kindiki added.
He emphasized that the market facilities are being standardized nationwide to ensure consistency and quality, reaffirming the government’s commitment to improving the working conditions of small-scale traders.
