Mount Kenya Universityβs (MKU) Medical School has reached a major milestone, officially joining the World Directory of Medical Schoolsβa prestigious global listing of more than 4,000 recognized medical institutions worldwide.
This achievement, confirmed in April 2025, signifies that MKU medical degrees are now recognised in the USA, UK, and Canada, unlocking new global career opportunities for its graduates.
According to the USAβs Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG), βgraduates of this school are eligible to apply to ECFMG for ECFMG Certification and for examination.β This is a vital requirement for practicing medicine or pursuing further training in the United States.
The World Directory of Medical Schools further confirms that medical degrees from MKU are βacceptable to the provincial/territorial medical authorities in Canada, and therefore acceptable to all medical organisations in Canada.β
This recognition builds on an earlier win for the universityβin 2024, the UKβs General Medical Council (GMC) formally recognised MKUβs Medical School. The GMC is the regulatory body that maintains official registers of medical practitioners in the UK, making this a major endorsement of the schoolβs academic and training standards.
The World Directory serves as a vital global reference point for regulatory bodies, researchers, students, and the public. Its mission is to provide accurate, up-to-date, and comprehensive information on medical schools around the world, helping stakeholders make informed decisions about the quality and status of medical education globally.
MKUβs journey in medical education began with its first class of 29 medical doctors, who graduated during the universityβs 19th graduation in August 2021. Since then, the institution has grown steadily, with full accreditation by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) and regional bodies including the East Africa Medical Practitioners and Dentists Boards/Councils.
During the 24th graduation ceremony held in Thika last year, Vice Chancellor Prof. Deogratius Jaganyi announced the launch of three cutting-edge postgraduate programs under the College of Health Sciences:
β’ Master of Pharmacy in Cosmetic Technology
β’ Master of Pharmacy in Industrial Pharmacy
β’ Master of Science in Industrial Pharmacognosy and Traditional Medicine
These programs complement MKUβs existing schools under the College of Health Sciencesβincluding the Medical School, School of Pharmacy, School of Clinical Medicine, School of Nursing, School of Public Health, and School of Nursingβwhich have produced thousands of graduates who now serve in various healthcare institutions both locally and globally.
This global recognition marks a new chapter for MKU Medical School, positioning it among the top-tier medical institutions in Africa and opening international doors for a new generation of Kenyan-trained doctors.
