Nursing apprentices (Cohort 3) from Mount Kenya University (MKU) have arrived safely in Germany, ready to commence their training in German hospitals. The students, who traveled over the weekend, are part of MKU’s international apprenticeship program, designed to equip Kenyan youth with global career opportunities in the healthcare sector.
MKU’s program partner, AG-Career Hub, based in Germany, will support the candidates in successfully integrating into the training and working environment in German hospitals. The hub will also facilitate career coaching and mentorship throughout their stay.
The departure follows a flagging-off ceremony at MKU’s Thika Main Campus, officiated last week by the Chairman of the University Council, Dr. Vincent Gaitho, and Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Deogratius Jaganyi. The event marked the official issuance of visas and air tickets to the students, ensuring their smooth transition to Germany.
Expansion of German Language Training and Career Pathways
Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Academic & Research Affairs, Dr. Mercyline Kamande, highlighted the university’s commitment to preparing students for international opportunities. She noted that MKU introduced German Language Training in January 2023, overcoming initial challenges to guide students to B2 proficiency levels.
“Through determination and strategic improvements, 50 candidates have successfully attained B2 certification, and 35 of them have chosen to pursue careers through this initiative. I extend my gratitude to all the partners involved for their dedication to the program’s success,” she said.
Dr Kamande also announced the introduction of Cohort 4, which will include training in Medizinische Technologin für Radiologie (Medical Technologist in Radiology), broadening career opportunities for healthcare professionals. Additionally, an AI-enabled German Language Training Program will be implemented, significantly enhancing learning efficiency and expanding access to international apprenticeship programs.
Strengthening Global Partnerships
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Deogratius Jaganyi emphasized the significance of this initiative in creating transformative career pathways for Kenyan youth.
“The send-off of Cohort 3 and the reception of Cohort 4 represent the success of a program that is unlocking global career opportunities, particularly in healthcare. This success would not have been possible without the dedication of our partners in ensuring a sustainable pool of nursing professionals,” he said.
Prof. Jaganyi also acknowledged the critical role played by Hochschule Koblenz University of Applied Sciences in Germany, which has been instrumental in providing world-class training and global job placements for MKU students. He commended the German Embassy for its unwavering support, particularly in facilitating visa issuance within a record four-day period and actively promoting the initiative through official channels.
Key Partnerships Driving Success
In addition to Hochschule Koblenz, other key partners include the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), which supports German language training by seconding lecturers and providing scholarships, making career development more accessible. Caritas Hospital in Bad Mergentheim & Tauberbischofsheim also serves as a healthcare partner, providing apprenticeship opportunities for MKU students.
MKU Chairman of the Council, Dr. Vincent Gaitho, congratulated both Cohort 3 and incoming Cohort 4, underscoring the university’s commitment to equipping students with the skills, knowledge, and networks required to thrive in today’s competitive world.
“We are proud of the partnerships and collaborations that enable our students to gain both academic and practical exposure, particularly in sectors that align with Kenya’s Vision 2030 and the government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA),” he said.

Expanding Opportunities: The Preparatory Certificate Course
To meet the growing demand for healthcare professionals in Germany, MKU launched the Preparatory Certificate Course in February 2025. In collaboration with Hochschule Koblenz University of Applied Sciences, the course prepares students for nursing apprenticeships (Ausbildung zum Krankenpfleger), surgical assistant roles (Operationstechnische Assistenz), and medical technologist positions in radiology (Medizinischer Technologe für Radiologie). The program is offered at MKU’s Thika Main Campus and Eldoret Campus.
Applicants undergo a two-step aptitude test conducted online by project partner arbquest Befragungssysteme of Germany. Eligible candidates must be under 29 years old, hold a KCSE certificate with a minimum grade of C (Plain), and demonstrate proficiency in German. Those with B2-level German proficiency may qualify with lower KCSE grades.
Upon completion of the 14-week course, graduates receive guaranteed apprenticeships in partner German hospitals, with organizers facilitating visas and work permits to ensure a seamless transition.
Conclusion
MKU’s commitment to global education and career development continues to bear fruit, with its apprenticeship programs offering students a direct pathway to international employment. By fostering strategic partnerships and leveraging technological advancements, the university remains at the forefront of equipping Kenyan youth with the skills needed to thrive in global healthcare markets.
