Dr. Henry Kiogora, the Head of the School of Business and Economics at Zetech University, addressing a group of recent Form Four graduates at the university’s amphitheatre in Ruiru, Kiambu County over the weekend
As the clock ticks towards the announcement of this year’s Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results, students preparing to join universities and tertiary institutions have been advised to select their courses carefully.
Educationist Veronica Kamau, head of the Tourism Department at Zetech University, emphasized the importance of aligning career choices with the strengths demonstrated in high school subjects.
Speaking during a career talk in Ruiru, Mrs. Kamau noted that many students initially choose their career paths in high school but later shift direction due to peer pressure and societal influences, often ending up in careers that do not suit their strengths or interests.
Dr. Henry Kiogora, who facilitated sessions on course selection, highlighted the critical role parents play in guiding students toward appropriate career choices. He urged families to actively support young people as they make these pivotal decisions.
Nicholas Ochieng, an aspiring Business Management student, expressed confidence in the current generation’s awareness of their aspirations.
However, he acknowledged that a little guidance is often necessary to refine their choices.
Grace Mbugua, another participant, described the career talk as an eye-opener for her peers. She expressed optimism that with the results forthcoming, students would be well-positioned to make informed decisions about their future careers.
The session underscored the importance of careful planning and support as students’ transition into the next phase of their academic and professional journeys.
