Thika Parents Urged to Return Young Mothers to School as Thika NG-CDF Issued 43 Million Bursary.
Parents in Thika Constituency whose daughters became pregnant and gave birth while in school but have not resumed learning have been urged to ensure the girls return to class.
Speaking during a bursary issuance event, Thika East Quality Assurance and Standards Officer Charity Njagi from the Ministry of Education said the government’s Return to School Policy, as anchored in the Education Act, 2013, guarantees every child the right to education, including young mothers.
Njagi noted that many of the affected girls in the constituency have been neglected and stigmatized within their communities, a situation she said must be addressed collectively. She further urged parents to ensure that all learners, including Grade 10 students who are yet to report back, return to school when institutions reopen next week.
In her remarks, Thika Town Member of Parliament Alice Ng’ang’a, who presided over the bursary distribution, announced that KSh 43 million had been disbursed to students from Gatunayaga, Kamenu, and Ngoliba wards. She said all 7,000 applicants from the three wards benefited from the funds.
The other two wards,Kamenu and Hospital will receive their cheques later in the week
Ng’ang’a added that the constituency received a total of 16,000 applications across all wards, noting that all qualified applicants were considered, with funds distributed equitably across secondary and special schools.
On the political front, the two-term MP, who is eyeing the Kiambu gubernatorial seat, dismissed criticism surrounding her bid, maintaining that no amount of intimidation will deter her ambition to become the county’s first female governor.
She cited leaders such as Anne Waiguru, Gladys Wanga, and Cecily Mbarire as examples of women who have successfully risen to top leadership positions, expressing confidence in her own quest.
Thika West deputy county commissioner James Wanyoike urged the parents to take care of their kids especially from drug and substance abuse.
