
The late KNCHR Chairperson Roseline Odede
Roseline Odhiambo Odede, HSC, was a distinguished advocate of the High Court of Kenya and the Chairperson of the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) until her untimely passing on Friday, 3rd January 2025, after a short illness. She was a champion of human rights, dedicating her life to protecting and promoting the rights and dignity of all Kenyans.
As KNCHR Chairperson, Roseline provided invaluable advice to the government and ensured Kenya met its reporting obligations to various international bodies. Her leadership and vision were instrumental in advancing the commission’s mandate.
Roseline held a Master of Laws degree from the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa, and had over 30 years of litigation experience in private practice. Her extensive pro bono work in human rights earned her the prestigious Head of State Commendation.
Previously, she served as Vice Chairperson of the Judges and Magistrates Vetting Board, where she was recognized for her expertise in governance, policy, and human rights. The East Africa Law Society also acknowledged her exceptional contributions to legal practice and service in the region.
A Certified Mediator, Arbitrator, and Social and Environmental Impact Auditor and Assessor, Roseline was deeply respected in her field. She held leadership roles in several professional organizations, including the Commonwealth Lawyers Association, East Africa Law Society, Law Society of Kenya, and FIDA Kenya.
Roseline Odede leaves behind a legacy of unwavering commitment to justice, gender equality, and human rights advocacy. She will be remembered as a trailblazer and an inspiration to many. The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights and the entire nation mourn her loss, and her contributions will forever be etched in history.
