Juja Traders Unite to Protect Businesses from Looters During Protests
After suffering heavy losses during recent demonstrations, traders in Juja Town have come together to form the Juja Business Community Forum, a group that will work closely with security officers to confront looters who take advantage of protests to steal and destroy property.
Speaking during a sensitisation meeting with traders in Juja, the Forum’s Chairperson, John Maina, said the group was born out of necessity after his hotel was looted and property worth over KSh 2 million destroyed.
“We saw the need to unite and protect what we have worked for over the years. We can’t sit back and watch as criminals masquerading as protesters destroy our businesses,” Maina said.
Cyrus Gachiki, the Forum’s Secretary, echoed the sentiments, warning those who plan to loot that their days are numbered. He urged all traders to stand together to deter organised theft during protests.
John Museu, the Branch Manager of Mathaai Supermarket Juja, narrated how police officers were overwhelmed by looters during the last unrest, resulting in massive losses. He called on all business owners to support the Forum’s initiative and protect businesses that have taken years to build.
The traders will identify themselves using reflectors branded ‘Juja Business Community Forum’ with a QR code that can be scanned to prevent imposters from infiltrating the group.
Also present during the meeting were Cyrus Gachiki, Jemmimah Njeri, and Irene Njoki, who pledged to rally more traders to join the cause and keep Juja’s businesses safe.
