A sign Post for Thika Police Station
Four police officers are under scrutiny for allegedly transporting a suspect from Othaya to Thika while intoxicated and without a proper case file.
The officers reportedly claimed they were taking the suspect to court on a Saturday—a day when courts in Kenya do not operate.
According to Wahome Thuku, a human rights advocate and lawyer of the High Court, the officers left Thika Police Station early in the morning on December 5. Driving to Witima Police Station in Othaya, Nyeri, they allegedly consumed a full bottle of whisky en route.
After picking up the suspect, a 58-year-old woman, the officers reportedly bought and drank another bottle of alcohol during the return trip.
Thuku described their behavior as reckless, stating that the officers sang traditional Itungati songs and the driver nearly caused an accident due to impaired judgment.
The officers, believed to be in their 20s and 30s, eventually returned to Thika Police Station with the suspect.
Adding to the controversy, Thuku shared on his Facebook page a cash bail receipt issued to the suspect, which lacked a case file number.
The receipt indicated that the suspect was to appear in court that Saturday, a procedural impossibility since courts do not operate on weekends in Kenya.
Thuku has called on the Inspector General of Police to intervene, urging collaboration to address the incident. “What kind of police officers do we have in this country?” he questioned in his statement.
More details about the incident are expected to emerge in the coming days.
