Ruiru Market dumpsite where water Tank was set to be Constructed
Ruiru Market Traders Protest Grabbing of Market Dumpsite
Traders at Ruiru Open-Air Market staged protests after the relocation of a nearby dumpsite to pave way for the construction of a water storage tank.
In a show of anger, the traders pulled down a wall that had been erected by a contractor in preparation for the project. They cited a possible grabbing of the land under the pretense of constructing a water tank.
They accused local leaders of failing to consult them, saying the committee representing them had not provided clear information about the planned development.
According to the traders, they were informed that the dumpsite had been moved to a location along Ruiru–Kiambu Road near a church an area they claim has already raised objections to the relocation.
Some committee members, they added, have also distanced themselves from the decision, saying they were not aware of the plans.
The traders further suggested that instead of relocating the dumpsite, authorities could consider installing waste collection containers within the market, as has been done in other areas.
Led by Kenneth Chege and Mary Nyambura, the traders emphasized that the current dumpsite location has been easily accessible to all, including elderly traders who form a significant portion of the market community.
Meanwhile, Market Chairman Peter Waiganjo defended the project, stating that the county government had identified the site as suitable for the construction of a water storage tank aimed at improving water access for traders.
He added that the project is funded by a donor in partnership with the Kiambu County Government. The traders have announced plans to hold a meeting next Thursday to deliberate on the way forward.
