Sarah Mullally Nominated as First Woman Archbishop of Canterbury
His Majesty The King has approved the nomination of the Rt Revd and Rt Hon Dame Sarah Mullally DBE for election as the next Archbishop of Canterbury.
Bishop Mullally, who will be the 106th Archbishop of Canterbury, makes history as the first woman to hold the Church of England’s most senior position.
Since 2018, she has served as the Bishop of London, another role in which she broke new ground as the first woman to be appointed. Before that, she was the Bishop of Crediton in the Diocese of Exeter.
Prior to her ordination in 2001, Mullally had a distinguished career in healthcare, becoming the Government’s Chief Nursing Officer for England at the age of 37 — the youngest person ever to hold the post. She trained as a cancer nurse and has often described nursing as “an opportunity to reflect the love of God.”
She is set to be formally ordained as Archbishop in March 2026.
