MKU Hosts Key Alumni Reunion in North Rift
Held under the theme “Together Again: Honouring the Past, Building the Future,” the Champions Region Alumni Meeting brought together former students of Mount Kenya University (MKU) from the Eldoret Campus and Kitale Centre for a highly successful reunion in Eldoret City.
Mount Kenya University hosted the high-level gathering to reconnect with its alumni and celebrate their journeys since graduation. The event marked a milestone as the first physical reunion of this vibrant alumni community from the region.
Congratulating the attendees, MKU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Deogratius Jaganyi described the gathering as the beginning of a more intentional and structured alumni engagement. “You are champions in your fields, champions of change, and champions of the values MKU holds dear—integrity, responsibility, excellence, teamwork, inclusivity, and innovation,” he said.
Prof. Jaganyi noted that with over 100,000 alumni across the globe, the MKU Alumni community is an invaluable reservoir of talent, experience, and inspiration. He commended the MKU Alumni Directorate for building a reliable bridge between the university and its former students.
He urged alumni to give back by mentoring current students, offering internships and job opportunities, and supporting scholarships, research, and campus development initiatives. “Volunteer your time in events, advisory roles, and alumni activities. By giving back, you empower others to succeed and ensure our university continues to grow as a hub of innovation, learning, and opportunity,” he said.
To further strengthen alumni recognition, the Vice-Chancellor announced the establishment of a special alumni award worth Ksh. 5 million. The award will honour an outstanding MKU graduate making a significant community impact. The call for nominations will be announced in the coming weeks, with the award presentation set for December 2025.
Dr. Emily Kirwok, Director of MKU Eldoret Campus and Chair of the Champions Cluster, emphasized the core goals of the reunion—reflection, reconnection, and mobilizing alumni to support current students. “As an institution that once mentored you, we now turn to you—our proud alumni—with a call to action. Let us collectively mentor the next generation, open doors to opportunities, and support graduates in finding meaningful employment,” she said.
The keynote speaker, Ms. Mercy Wanjiru, Regional Coordinator of the Kenya Private Schools Association (North Rift) and an alumna of MKU’s MBA and BBM programmes, described the event as a “coming home.” “This is not just an event; it is a celebration of who we were, who we’ve become, and who we’re yet to be,” she said.
Ms. Wanjiru praised MKU’s visionary leadership and called on alumni to support mentorship and create opportunities for student placements. “We are proud to be associated with our alma mater and are committed to giving back through mentorship and other alumni forums,” she added.
The reunion underscored the vital role of alumni as champions across sectors including business, healthcare, education, public service, and innovation. Their ongoing involvement through mentorship, webinars, and career forums continues to drive MKU’s positive impact.
Virginia Musawa, Director of Alumni Relations at MKU, thanked the alumni for keeping the university spirit alive. “MKU is more than an institution—it is a lifelong community,” she said. She praised university leadership for investing in alumni engagement and acknowledged the alumni’s commitment to mentoring, participating in reunions, and other initiatives. “As alumni, you are our brand ambassadors, mentors, and partners in change,” she emphasized.
She also stressed the importance of expanding mentorship, career guidance, internships, and attachment opportunities. “We are committed to building a strong and active Kitale–Eldoret alumni network that collaborates, connects, and contributes meaningfully to society,” she said.
The event was a powerful reminder of the strength of MKU’s alumni network and the university’s enduring mission to educate, connect, and inspire. As the MKU community looks to the future, alumni were encouraged to remain actively engaged and to lead by example—continuing to fuel a legacy of excellence well beyond graduation.
The reunion was graced by dignitaries including Uasin Gishu Governor Hon. Dr. Jonathan Bii (represented by County Attorney Mr. Silvester Metto), former MKU Council Chairman Prof. David Serem, university leaders, and alumni representatives. In their remarks, the guests expressed gratitude for the continued loyalty of alumni and reaffirmed their importance as university ambassadors.
