Mount Kenya University (MKU) has been appointed as the United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 9 Hub Chair, focusing on Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure. The prestigious role, conferred by the UN Department of Global Communications, will run from January 2025 to December 2027.
In an official appointment letter addressed to MKU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Deogratius Jaganyi, UN Outreach Division Director Maher Nasser commended the university’s commitment to fostering innovation and making a tangible impact on communities.
“The recognition is based on MKU’s extensive initiatives that nurture student-led innovation and enhance the quality of life within surrounding communities,” Mr. Nasser stated.
He highlighted key projects, including the Annual Innovation and Entrepreneurship Fair and sustainable infrastructure collaborations with the government, as clear demonstrations of MKU’s alignment with SDG 9’s vision.
A Legacy of Sustainable Development Leadership
Before this appointment, MKU served as the UNAI SDG 10 Hub for Reduced Inequalities for three and a half years. During this period, the university championed inclusive policies that improved accessibility, created equal opportunities in education and employment, and increased representation for people with disabilities.
“These efforts have fostered a more inclusive society, reduced stigma, and encouraged greater community engagement. MKU has positioned itself as a model institution in SDG advocacy, publishing scholarly work on sustainability and spearheading SDG-driven projects,” said Prof. Jaganyi.
Driving Digital Transformation and Innovation
As MKU assumes its new role, Prof. Jaganyi reaffirmed the university’s commitment to advancing SDG 9 and supporting all Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through impactful action and collaboration.
“MKU has embraced ICT as a driver of digital transformation,” he said. “We will continue strengthening partnerships with academic institutions, research organizations, and industries to equip students with hands-on experience and innovative skills.”
The university also houses an Innovation and Incubation Hub, where student ideas are developed into market-ready products and protected intellectual properties.
“MKU is committed to providing a holistic and inclusive education system,” Prof. Jaganyi added. “With a vision to be a global center of excellence in education, research, and innovation, we remain dedicated to fostering sustainable development and global transformation.”
